Tunisia: A photovoltaic power plant in Tozeur at the end of 2017

Construction of a solar photovoltaic power plant in Chamsa in the governorate of Tozeur will begin in early 2017. This project will be financed in the framework of Tunisian-German cooperation for 27 million dinars and realized by an Italian company, revealed To TAP Riadh Abassi, sales manager at the regional distribution department (Gafsa and Tozeur), of the STEG.

This is the first photovoltaic plant to be built on behalf of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) and will enter industrial operation at the end of 2017. This pilot project will be linked to Power grid in the region to provide better service to the tourism, industry and agriculture sectors, he said.

The production capacity is expected to reach 10 MVA (mega volt ampere), initially, and will increase to 20 MVA in 2018, thanks to extension works. In the framework of the Tunisian Solar Plan to 2030, private initiatives will be launched to create photovoltaic solar power plants in the southwestern governorates, which are the sunniest in the country, the source added.
